Neighborhood History

In the Late 1700's Empire Loyalist Thomas Silverthorn received a land grant and over a number of years
later his Son Joseph Silverthorn began to settle along the Etobicoke Creek. After Joseph Silverthorn settled in the area he purchased lots in
the area for a sum of 200 pounds.
The area was further developed with a Saw Mill and the fertile land made promising farm land and a good homestead (named Mill farm).

Over the course of time the City of Toronto expanded rapidly thus increasing the taxes on the 1000 acres of Silverthorn farm (Mill Farm).
The increased Tax burden led to the farm becoming unprofitable and a large sector was sold to Mark Cavotti in 1958 with a Promise to Newman Siliverthorn to preserve the trees and forest wherever possible.
Mark Cavotti's associates in the real estate development jokingly refferred to it as "Marks Land" and later morphed into an honourable mention with the name "Markland Wood."

The real estate development accounted for elements of nature such as the topography of the Etobicoke Creek and Renforth River with the planner preserving areas for parks, golf courses and many house lots that included mature trees.
A four bedroom home could be purchased for around $26,000 at the time. (Keep in mind inflation as that was a fairly substantial purchase at the time).
